Welcome to Grand Terminus - dignified elegance in Bergen!

Grand Terminus is a classic, and yet modern hotel, located in the centre of Bergen. New owners have revived what was once the cities most luxurious and elegant hotel when it opened in 1928. Today Grand Terminus is more beautiful than ever - a very special hotel with a very central location close to several parking garages, railway, airport shuttle, light rail and local and regional buses.

Thoughtful renovation

The rooms have been renovated with attention to style and character. The Terminus Hall, as well as the smaller conference and meeting rooms have gone through careful and thoughtful face lifts. Beautiful Ambrosia is next. Grand Terminus was regulated in 1995, as one of the first city hotels in the country. This obliges and inspires. The hotel is a home to the conscious traveller, and a place where the local populations have celebrated small and big events for generations.

Good meals in atmospheric surroundings

Our good kitchen serves a generous breakfast buffet, and exciting and fresh lunch buffet, informal Tapas dinners, and grand feasts with 4 or 5 courses. On warm summer days the guests can dine in the garden. Grand Terminus has the characteristic Whisky Bar, where there's an open fire, oak walls, and seven meters under the ceiling. The rich selection of whisky is of course supplemented by whatever the guest desires. It's a great place to both start and end your evening.

Central location

The location of the hotel is unique. Grand Terminus is withdrawn from the noisy streets of Bergen, but is still very centrally located adjacent to the railway station. Three parking garages, express buses, airport shuttle and local and regional busses are nearby. The Fish Market and Torgalmenning is only a 5-minute walk away. The Grieg Hall and the Light Rail are also nearby.

Wellbeing with fitness, sauna and spa

Of course Grand Terminus has a fitness room with modern equipment, sauna and spa. Staying at Grand Terminus is supposed to do you good.

Award winning architecture

Hotel Grand Terminus was designed by the architects Fredrik Arnesen and Arthur Darre Kårbø, and opened in 1928. The year after Hotel Grand Terminus was awarded the much coveted architectural award Hauen Fonds Diploma. As partners the two architects were inseparable, and they manage to create a long line of distinctive buildings in Bergen and other places, such as in the north of Norway. They moved effortlessly between styles, from Baroque to Classicism and Functionalism. The monumental Bergen Privatbank, set is granite, was built on Torgalmenningen. Arnesen and Darre Kårbø also designed Svaneapoteket, and Bergen Folkehotell (today named Hotel Rosenkrantz), which was built to resolve the shortage in overnight accommodation in Bergen after the great fire of 1916. Nøstehjørnet and the towering Lysverket in Bergen town centre proved that Arnesen and Darre Karbø also mastered functional design. Together with Ragnhild B. Smørås, Aud Hunskår has been responsible for design and interior decorating at Grant Hotel Terminus. Hunskår was awarded for the original Intrasia doors she created for Hotel Augustin.

A contemporary hotel with historical foundation

Just like the sister hotel, Hotel Augustin, Grand Terminus is family owned and completely independent of the big hotel chains. We took over Grand Terminus in 2006 with this promise: We intend to take good care of this unique hotel - and will develop it further. Here you are guaranteed unique hotel experiences, in stunning surroundings, renovated with piety. The polar explorer Roald Amundsen and royalty have had their rest here (an interesting curiosity is that the hotel was owned for many years by the Inner Mission - as a rehabilitation hotel). Today the hotel wishes all its guests Welcome Home!

Application for expansion of the hotel - A sculptural project

In January 2009 we applied to expand and renew the part of the hotel which isn't conserved as cultural heritage. Read more in Bergens Tidende by following this link (in Norwegian):

Grand Terminus for the environment

On the 17th of June 2009 the hotel obtained visible evidence that it's environmentally friendly. The hotel has very low co2 emissions because we're connected to district heating provided by BKK. We have now reduced the amount of waste we produce and the energy we use to a good level, and we still have areas we're going to improve. We still think we've reached far, and we're proud to have been awarded the Environment Light House certificate. Travel by train and stay at Grand Terminus - and you travel eco-friendly!
